Birth Announcement: Noah Gabriel

Join me in welcoming baby Noah Gabriel, born right at home early in the morning of May 28, 2016! I had the absolute joy of doulaing for Noah's big sister Aurora 2 years ago and it warms my heart to have been there to welcome sweet Noah, as well. Noah's parents, Jamie and Gabe, made an awesome team. They prepared well with a private Birthing From Within class, even though Aurora was born naturally just a couple of years ago. They took the time to devote their attention to *this* pregnancy and *this* baby, and I'd say it paid off big time! Baby was positioned quite well by the time Active Labor set in, in part thanks to Jamie's attention to Spinning Babies exercises she learned in class. J

Transition in Labor: Catch the (Theta brain) Wave

We've all seen the images of the serene goddess-like woman, focused so laser-sharply on her breath and her inner process that she hardly even appears to be in labor. How is she doing that? In the chance that your trip through labor looks a little different, I want you to know what that hardest stage of labor really entails, how your body can actually help you (and your baby!) out, what it can look like and what your partner can do to really help you through it. What is Transition, exactly? Transition is typically the shortest and most intense phase of labor. I love calling it a phase, because it's just that; it doesn't last forever! For context, the first stage of labor includes Early Labor,

Doula Diaries: Sunday May 22, 2016

Ever wonder what it's like to be a doula with a family? I'll tell ya! Welcome to my doula life! My main characters are Mike, my superhero of a husband and father to our three children; Jace, my 11 year old guitar-playing, x-box loving, sharp-witted son; Kaia, my 8 year old sunshine daughter; and Ty, my 20-month old whirlwind of a toddler. And then there's me! I've been doulaing since 2011 and have attended around 60 births to date. This is my full-time gig! With three children and a doula business, private and group childbirth education classes, evening sports and afterschool homework, staying at home as a full-time mom and also creating space for my own health and fitness, there is, as th

Some Like It Hot

Meet Kristin, Jenn and Sarah*. All three are first time mothers. Here's what they have to say about choosing their birth attendants: "I love my OB! He delivered me, and my mom loved him, so he's delivering my baby, too!" -Kristin "I'm just looking for someone covered by my insurance. I'd like to have a midwife, but my insurance won't cover that." -Jenn "I've had the easiest pregnancy and I feel great. When I ask my doctor about the birth she's really laid back and tells me we'll cross that bridge when we get there. I like not having to worry about a thing." -Sarah Until you're in labor. Or processing your birth after the fact. Then, often times the story changes. Same three mothers, this tim

Birth Announcement

I've been blessed to attend another beautiful birth! John and Amanda welcomed their yet-to-be-named baby girl early this morning at Cape Coral Hospital. She is beautiful, just like her mama! This couple made some really tough birth decisions during their labor and dug deep to bring their baby earthside. Join me in welcoming their 8lb sunshine. Love birth!

Hospital Birth Plans: The Only Thing You Really Need to Include (with simple template)

It's beautiful to see the shift as a first time pregnant mother moves from her romanticized idea of pregnancy and birth, towards her "Birth Warrior" self as her pregnancy progresses. Ask any first time pregnant mother in her first trimester about her "birth plan" and you're bound to get a happy-confused response. "Birth Plan? What exactly do you mean? I'm just going to kind of let things happen! I'm super laid-back!" Or "Birth Plan? Oh, I trust my doctor! That's what I hired her for. She'll take care of my plans, completely." Now, ask any pregnant mother in her third trimester, with the reality of labor dancing in the not too distant future, and you're likely to get a much different respons
